Why do we trust content written by humans?

It's not because humans are accurate. A recent Gartner report found that about 50% of consumers would prefer brands that don't use GenAI in consumer-facing content. At first glance, this sounds like people simply don't trust AI.

But I don't think the issue is AI vs. humans.

Humans aren't automatically trustworthy either

People make mistakes, misunderstand context, and sometimes publish incorrect information. Yet we trust content written by people every day.

Why? Because when a human writes something, we know who is responsible. There is always someone we can point to and say: they said this.

With AI, responsibility often becomes blurry. If something is wrong, who is accountable? The company? The developer? The tool?

So maybe the problem is not that content is generated by AI. Maybe the problem is that accountability is unclear.

The real trust signal

People don't trust content because it's written by humans. They trust content because someone is accountable for it.

This distinction matters more than most teams realize. And it changes how we should think about localization in the AI era.

What this means for localization

Localization is no longer just about translating text. It's about defining intent, ownership, and responsibility across languages.

Instead of translating an English "source of truth," companies may need to define the intent, audience, and risk clearly — and then generate each language version from that intent, while keeping clear ownership and responsibility for the final content.

The real question is no longer "Who translated this?" It is "Who is responsible for what this content says?"
