People say AI is the cheap version of human translation. They have it backwards.
This line upsets people. But the point isn't that AI is superior. It's that the task we've been calling "translation" was never one task.
The conversion layer
For a long time, the industry defined translation as simple transfer: move the words into another language, keep the structure, don't question the logic.
That was only one layer — conversion.
You weren't allowed to question the source. You couldn't challenge the logic. You had to "stay faithful." All you were really allowed to do was replace words and optimize for natural phrasing.
For conversion, AI is the more suitable tool. Not because humans became worse. Because humans were never the optimal tool for that layer in the first place.
What AI exposed
Once conversion became automated, the upper layer finally came into view: designing meaning — the layer where judgment lives.
Should this be translated at all? Does the original logic survive in this culture? Will this phrasing create friction, doubt, or drop-off? Does the user need a different explanation, not different wording?
AI can write fluent text. But it cannot decide what the experience should be, or how information needs to be shaped so that users in a specific market actually understand it.
The mistake
The mistake wasn't that AI "replaced" human translators. The mistake was assuming all of this lived under one label.
When the lower layer is automated, the real work shifts upward — to judgment, structure, and intent.
Human translation isn't becoming "premium." It was simply sitting in the wrong layer for decades.
The value was never in swapping words. It was in designing the meaning.
