Every time I take an Uber to the airport, I want to tip the driver in cash. Especially if it's late at night, or I've got heavy bags. And I want to say thank you — not just with words, but in a way that feels real.

The app offers an "extra" screen for tipping, but I never use it.

Not because I don't want to tip, but because I don't know if it really goes to the driver. I don't know if the driver knows it came from me. And if I want to say thank you right now, cash feels clearer, more human.

The interface doesn't support the intent

Uber's website says the full amount goes to the driver. But the app doesn't make that clear. There's no confirmation, no emotional feedback, no sense of "this moment matters."

The interface doesn't support what I actually want to do: to show gratitude — personally, immediately, unmistakably.

And it turns out drivers feel the same. On Reddit, many drivers say they'd rather get cash: it's instant, personal, and tax-free.

What this tells us about UX

This isn't just a payment problem. It's a trust and feedback problem.

When users want to do something meaningful — not just transactional — the interface needs to acknowledge that intent. A confirmation message. A sense of delivery. Some signal that the moment actually landed.

Without that, the interface feels like a wall between the user and their intention.

So even in a world of apps and automation, sometimes cash still speaks louder. Not because it's more efficient. Because it's more honest.
